Happy Chooks is a co-operative between two friends. There are two main aims to this site- we want to educate people about the reality of factory farms and we want to encourage people to take home ex-battery hens & to provide information on how to care for them. We are by no means chicken experts so this page is just based on our personal experiences.

Between the two of us, we hope to take on as many ex-batts as possible to rehabilitate and re-home. We’re happy for people to get in contact with us regarding any possible chooks we might have needing homes, but please be patient as the number of chickens we have will vary, particularly in these early stages. We will be selling these chickens at cost price – $5 each.

As we’re currently in the very early stages of setting this program up, we DO NOT have any available for re-homing at the moment. Keep an eye on the blog to see if and when we need homes.

Did you know?

You can purchase “end of lay” cage or barn girls from your local egg farmer. Just google egg farmers in your area and give them a call. Usually they send a lot of their chickens to slaughter every 6 weeks and sell these girls for $5 each just prior to trucking them out.

Obviously this comes with ethical dilemmas (purchasing from the very thing we’re against) however the benefit is that one no longer has to purchase from any egg farms when they have their own laying flock.

If you have any questions, concerns or feedback (please do correct me wherever I might be wrong!) please feel free to email us:
